Helping Your Child With Physical Challenges
Pediatric physical therapy deals with a wide variety of problems that may affect your child’s development from infancy through the teen years. At Brewer Physical Therapy in Shreveport, Bossier City, and Minden, Louisiana, our goal is to ensure that your child’s physical capabilities in everyday activities are the best it can be.
Treating your child includes examining, evaluating, and assessing the areas in which your child may have difficulty functioning. We then incorporate active therapies to address those areas.
Amanda Brewer, DPT, is especially sensitive to children’s needs. She knows that a child’s body undergoes many changes and that many of the concerns that arise are treatable with physical therapy.
Our child-specific physical therapy care includes:
At Brewer Physical Therapy, we have the resources, experience, and hands-on expertise to maximize your child’s functional ability and quality of life.
For example, we often get questions about W-sitting, when a child sits with knees bent in front of them and legs turned outward, making the shape of a “W.” Many of our patients ask us whether this sitting position is harmful for their child. Because prolonged W-sitting can lead to tight muscles and balance disorders, we offer a few signs to look out for:
- Pigeon-toed gait
- Balance issues
- Back or hip pain
- Restricted ability to rotate the trunk
- Pain or difficulty when walking
If your child is displaying any of the above signs, chances are a physical therapist can help. We can even offer suggestions that can help relieve the stress of W-sitting – such as using alternative sitting positions, and core strengthening exercises. At Brewer Physical Therapy, we are adept at treating and communicating effectively with children. Visit us today and see how we can help your child live a pain-free and active life.

Is physical therapy (PT) better than steroid injections? A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that patients with knee osteoarthritis treated with PT experienced less pain and better physical function after one year than patients who received steroid injections. These findings suggest the benefits of PT for knee osteoarthritis may be more long-lasting than earlier believed.
